BOOK
Currently in the final stages of the editing process, Norman's book 'BRISTOL GARDENS', attempts to capture the unique experience of living in the penthouse of the notorious CHELSEA HOTEL, Manhattan's Bohemian ground zero.
For 25 years, ending in 2007 when the Hotel changed hands, Norman witnessed, and was part of, the everyday circus of life in this monument to non-conformity, with it's extraordinary cast of artists, musicians, film stars, counter culture icons, visiting luminaries and outright crazies.
During this time, he designed, operated and lived in the ground-breaking nightclubs of the era, and the extensive rooftop gardens became a magnet for the hotel’s inmates, an oasis for the denizens of nightlife and clubland. The modern Burlesque movement was largely created during his residence, and a constant parade of old hands and new blood kept it alive and kicking in the heart of New York City.
All of this afforded Norman a singular view of this heady and influential period, and together with his personal adventures, the book tells tall stories, debunks myths, examines actual life in the Old Hotel, and tells you not only where the bodies are buried, but what they were wearing at the time.
