GRAPHIC DESIGN
GRAPHICS
Starting as an air-brusher, with occasional employment by Hypgnosis on album covers, comic work for MAD UK, and myriad British poster and commercial projects, by the time he relocated to New York, he was ready for bigger things. In 1982, after working on several independent magazines, he became overall Art Director for Marvel Comics, a lifelong passion. In '85, he opened his studios, Gosney Design, specializing in movie posters, campaigns, and artwork for nightclubs. In the following years, he branched out into merchandising for several clients, including the World Wrestling Federation, King Features Syndicate, Paul McCartney's band Wings, Prince, and several Manhattan restaurants, nightspots, and movie companies. Norman continues to pursue graphic design in London, but now focuses on fine art. He has enjoyed several solo and group exhibitions with more to come. |
INTERIORS
Nightclub design and interiors became the main focus of Norman's design work during the 80's and 90's. He enjoyed various roles, from team player to overall designer on many of the period's iconic nightspots, including Danceteria, Area, The Palladium, and Limelight in New York, Gold in Tokyo, P1 in Munich, Hell in Miami, and dozens of smaller venues. In the 90's, this work expanded to hotels, fashion houses, restaurants, and high-end retail stores. He became noted for his signature technique, Victorianization, where bland modern interiors were transformed into warm, welcoming reflections of times past, used extensively in the Burlesque and Neo-Vaudeville venues he helped engender. The conversion of a Buddhist temple into his club, Chinatown, in Shanghai, is considered a high point. Currently, he is working on the design of various projects in New York, California, and Portugal. |
